01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

At Irodoriya, skewers are the focus, but small plates let you shape the meal around them. The assorted yakitori platter comes with 6 skewers per serving. Tsukune (chicken meatballs) costs 150 yen, while grated-daikon tsukune is 180 yen and tsukune with egg yolk is 330 yen, offering several options even within one type of skewer. The selection ranges from familiar choices such as chicken thigh, negima (chicken and spring onion) and chicken wings to chicken tenderloin with plum and shiso, chopped wasabi and chopped mentaiko, with their flavours signalled in the names. Share a platter among a group or add individual skewers to suit your tastes; the menu includes items priced from 1 skewers for 110 yen up to 150 yen.

One diner singled out the chicken carpaccio as a memorable dish and recalled that the black edamame was freshly boiled and pleasantly sweet. Other chicken dishes include chicken yukhoe, seared chicken thigh and a half portion of chicken nanban, giving you alternatives to grilled skewers. Another diner described the deep-fried dried squid in detail: soft inside its light batter, it made an enjoyable accompaniment to drinks. The menu also lists agedashi tofu, deep-fried nameko mushrooms and sweet potato tempura, so you can add fried dishes between skewers. Edamame and chilled tofu are available too, including as something to snack on while you wait for the grill.

For drinks, there’s a dry sour described as crisp and not sweet, a tomato sour billed as a good match for food, and Chita whisky highballs with a light mouthfeel that brings out the flavours of yakitori. You might start with a sour and a small plate, then choose a drink to go with the skewers or fried dishes. To finish, options include onigiri or ochazuke with plum or mentaiko, as well as chicken rice porridge. There’s plenty to choose from, whether you’re settling in for more yakitori or adding a few small plates, right through to the final bite.

Some diners note that grilled dishes can take a while to arrive, so ordering edamame or chilled tofu first is one option. Reservations are available, which may be useful if you have plans set.
